Please read this page to learn what a Happening is, and if your event qualifies.
Named for the vibrant, unpredictable performance art activities of the 1960s, Happenings are non-commercial creative events that take place at a set time and location, on the date of and within the footprint of the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk.
We also have ways for commercial events to get listed, you can email us to request a Sponsor Package if the Happenings description doesn’t fit what you do.
Examples of acceptable Happenings: an interactive recreation of Yoko Ono’s “Painting to Hammer A Nail” on a sandwich board worn by a 7 foot tall man with blue hair who will be found in the vicinity of 4th and Main from 5-6pm.
Examples of unacceptable Happenings: any of the above scheduled to take place inside a shop, restaurant, bar or other commercial venue—but move it out onto the sidewalk—and keep moving, so you don’t block traffic—and you’re fine.
To get your event included on the Art Walk website, you should be able to answer yes to each of the following questions:
1) Is it free to attend or participate in the Happening?
2) Is it held in a non-commercial or public space, where no money is changing hands?
3) Does it take place on the second Thursday of the month?
4) Is it located in Downtown Los Angeles?
5) Do you know enough about it, as the event promoter or an interested fan, to be able to submit accurate information about the Happening?
If you answered 5 to all these questions, great!
To submit your Happening for consideration into our approval queue, please provide the following information:
1) a URL for the Happening (if there is one)
2) Name of the Happening
3) Location of the Happening
4) Date and Time of the Happening (date should be 2nd Thursday of the month)
5) Contact info for people wanting more information (phone and/or email)
6) A short description of the Happening (three sentences maximum, please).
Again, please utilize the form below to submit this information. We’ll consider it for publication on the Art Walk website. Happenings will go live shortly before the date of the Art Walk. This is a new program, still in the experimental stages, but our hope is to be able to have a space for listing all non-commercial creative events during the Art Walk in a central, easily searched place. Thanks for posting, and for spreading the word about Happenings at the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk!
