Floating, hanging, cradling, sagging, pushing. This is the vocabulary of Abraham Elterman’s images. The paintings and works on paper depict forms of clear organic lineage engaging with each other. In the detail of the forms — the modeling and shaping—and in the nature of the interactions these images speak of a sensuous and gentle universe intimating notions of individuality, connectedness and empathy.
While there are many points of consistency between the paintings and the works on paper there are also clear differences: the images in the canvases are dynamic, caught in midair and float with an air of optimism while the more recent images on paper depict more static, almost immovable compositions. The looseness of composition in the paintings seem to speak of freedom and animation while the works on paper speak more of a tender accommodation –where each form is instrumental in helping define each neighboring form. Yet, what predominates in both instances is the use of sensuousness as a means to depict communication.
Elterman’s Mexican heritage is clearly visible in the boldness of form and color. The result is a surprising mix of strong imagery that is nevertheless enveloped in a overall atmosphere of calmness and resolution.
